This article connects environmental and digital media education with the guiding metaphor of water and explores ecomedia literacy as a methodology that prompts students to perform a holistic analysis and systems thinking of gadgets using four zones of inquiry: ecoculture, political ecology, ecomateriality, and lifeworld. Students study the discourses, symbols, and stories associated with gadgets through ecoculture. Political ecology examines the ideological aspects of gadgets and how social structures facilitate their production chain. Materiality focuses on the composition and manufacturing process of the gadget. Lifeworld delves into the phenomenological experience of the gadget and its impact on sensory, cognitive, and emotional experiences. The article reflects on student research that utilized ecomedia literacy and the insights they generated regarding the environmental impacts of their personal gadgets.
